day thirty

Whatever tickles your fancy

This wraps up my 30 day challenge journey! It was fun, although I wasn't very consistent in posting. I think I'll be looking for another blog challenge to complete throughout January (maybe one a month? Ha, I crack myself up); sounds both fun and torturous!

For this last day, I'm going to just provide a link to my Flickr--as a part of my New Year's Resolutions, I decided I'm going to attempt the 365 project for both self portraiture and general photography. As if either wasn't overly ambitious on its own.

Wish me luck! I already had a close call with Jan 1st's self portrait, but I'm determined to try and make this work...eep.

I also realized today that in addition to my current NYRs, I'm going to add:

18 | No lying down with the laptop, and minimize use of laptop on bed (which I currently am doing...)

19 | Do homework and read books while sitting in a chair, unless deliberately trying to fall asleep.

I have a problem with utilizing my bed to its fullest...ie sitting on it absolutely all the time, whether eating or doing homework or reading. Not only is this horrible for my already-deteriorating posture, it creates this huge crater in my bed. Which sucks. And seeing 2011 is a major savings year (with my brother on his "own" at grad school, this is the first year in four and the only gap in nine total years that we won't be paying for college tuition), I probably won't get a new bed or mattress, which I was hoping for :(.

But anyway, today was relatively quiet. I didn't exercise (poo) due to the early closing time and fact that I fell asleep while reading a required book. However, R&R is always nice, and I can pardon myself, seeing it's the New Year :).

However, I do need to go to sleep now and start being super efficient in everything I do. Thus, bye for now!

31 December 2010

day twenty-nine

Hopes, dreams, and plans for the next 365 days

Look, I made it just in time for New Year's Day! :) Hopefully I'll finish this blog post before the ball drops--I'm so psyched!

Nonetheless, here are my resolutions:

2011

1 | read through the Bible

2 | exercise on a routine basis

3 | learn to cook

4 | clean my room every other week

5 | donate old clothing, really whittle down closet

6 | drink more water, less soda and tea, and eat more fruit

7 | work on bad habits

8 | organize and upload photos on a normal basis

9 | read a book every month

10 | blog weekly, if not more (start using lookbook?)

11 | be more open with my faith

12 | knit and/or sew something

13 | practice the guitar every other day, if not daily--also, work on singing

14 | use the computer less/go outside more, and keep up my relationships with friends

15 | take Abu on more walks; once every weekend, at least

16 | love God, love others, love myself

17 | be happy :)

I'm actually pretty satisfied with this year and my life at the moment, but there's always more and simple things to strive for, no?

Happy New Year's, everyone! Cheers and God bless.

day twenty-eight

Your year, in great detail

Again, I'm going to do a recap for this one! I was thinking that perhaps if I finish a blog post in the early early hours of the day, I can write another one tonight (seems like tomorrow night right now) and get away with posting my New Year's Resolutions right before it strikes 12am!

PS, I adore the New Year. New starts, new feelings, new stigmas. So inspiring, though I'm betting that sounds especially dorky.

But without further ado:

January
Well, this time last year I was still a junior. Very weird to think about. This means that my days were probably spent in dull anticipation of Junior Research, a constant state of terror due to my AP Calculus teacher, but still full of amusement, seeing the majority of my friends were still in school with me.

The first month of the year also meant I was on my resolution-high, probably trying to be as perfect as possible, quickly failing, and losing steam. This won't happen this year.

Also, I distinctly remember taking the SAT Subject Test for literature. Hmm. Oh, and of course, midterms. Which probably means the 18-day extra snow weekend we received happened around this time. Such great memories :).

February
To be quite honest, the first two months are pretty much the same for me, academics-wise. But February always means winter retreat, which this year was a joint one (no snowboarding, but meeting lots of other people, yes!). I suppose what most clearly sticks out is that WCEC officially met C4 for the first time at the joint retreat, which ensued in much communication and stellar jam sessions. And a visit to Friendly's-oh-wait-too-many-people-so-Five Guys.

Third marking period, already...probably freaked out a lot concerning my grades. That's a given, though. Not much is eventful in the winter months, usually.

March
Okay, I lied. I don't recall March as being a huge point, either. Actually, upon thinking back, I'm more convinced that the snow thing might have occurred later in the year and not right after our winter break...but I'm probably wrong. I'm actually doubting myself at this moment. Hmm.

But I do believe it was a cold March. At this point, the slopes are basically closed so there's no real point in it being wintry outside. I'm trying to remember significant events, but nothing huge comes to mind. Probably was counting down to spring break.

April
Ah, the month of ultimate stress. College application results for all my friends, for one, and the beginning of AP cramming...although I'm fairly certain I didn't start until May. Huh.

Oooh! I did visit California for the first time since our move, which was an absolutely fantastic visit. Got to see UCSB, USC, Cal, and Stanford while we were over on the West Coast, along with some wonderful beaches. Is it weird that my favorite memories were driving along Route 1? The scenery is just breathtaking. And although it rained in Monterey, I clearly remember being in complete awe at how beautiful the city and everything was, nonetheless.

I love California.

But anyway, April was also prom...interesting. And prom dress shopping, I suppose. I still can't believe it took almost no convincing to get my parents to agree on the BCBG number I fell in love with. I need somewhere else to wear it to. I love that dress.

May
AP exams, enough said. Mrs. Gupta also passed in this month, something I wish wasn't the first thing to pop up in mind, but undeniably would. I wasn't close to her, but her presence was trademark at Charter, and still dearly missed.

After AP exams, we played cards in literally every class. The school year crumbles after mid-May, so that would probably mean my skin got a lot better, haha. I can't wait until May 2011.

June
Vacation, obviously! The first stop was Hanover for Austin's graduation. It rained. I got my first Anthropologie dress. And has delicious Asian cuisine. Who knew you could find such well-priced restaurants in the middle of the forest? No making fun of Dartmouth, though--love to my brother's alma mater!

After his graduation came Work Camp, which I had skipped a year of. Fun times.

...And right after that,

July
Nova Scotia.

This is pretty all-encompassing, seeing the program lasted five weeks. The best camp experience I've ever had, hands down. I was so surprised by myself in this program--I can't believe I actually learned to speak French and turned into a slight extrovert while speaking only a foreign language. Strange things happen in Canada.

But right, some of my best memories. I do not at all regret going, even if it did result in a $400 phone bill and getting verbally punished, heh. I adore and miss my friends from la Nouvelle-Ecosse, and am certain we will meet again (although the majority of them have already had various get-togethers that I couldn't attend :(...). I'm banking on backpacking Europe with two of my closest to meet my other lovely in Germany, hopefully soon.

I miss those girls to death.

August
This marks the end of the Sainte Anne's experience, but at the same time, a complete curveball and memory in the opposite direction: Haiti.

I don't think I need to say much about this. I've never before (obviously) experienced anything of this sort, but as I've said before, the absolute most crazy thing (besides the country's beauty, speaking to the locals, working with the locals, etc.) was that time literally froze, suspended in midair. I never knew what time it was, and the days were both so quick and so excruciatingly slow in the most delicious way imaginable.

I don't know how to explain it. In short, amazing trip.

And then I got home to see a few kiddos before they embarked for college. I missed most of the others.

And school started.

September
Senior year begins. A good month, since everyone's in the hype of the new school year (again with the fresh starts thing!). Seeing I love my classes this year, although they aren't all easy, everything was fairly enjoyable. I also adore the new senior privileges, although I think I'm going to stop leaving school at 11am on those days when I only have two real classes in the morning...I got this strange attendance letter today. But that's irrelevant.

Mood for the month? Utter amazement of how far I've come.

October
Lots of fun stuff! My birthday, for one, which was unusually eventful (again, most of my friends are in college at this point) but sweet. I got my first pair of Frye boots, which I subsequently wore almost every day. Love those babies.

Also, pep rally. This is the one day in the year where I burst with energy and pride for my school. A bit embarrassing, but I love it.

In addition to this, fall really kicks in. I don't have a particularly favorite season, but I love fall--the colors, layering, need to wear jeans again...just not getting sick. But definitely a quick month.

November
Ah, the eleventh month. The first thing that comes to mind is college applications, and anxious anticipation. Not so fun, but admittedly a good experience.

What else? This month flew quickly; I spent 4/30 days in New York City on three separate occasions. One to visit Columbia, one for NYU, and once for an AP Art trip.

Speaking of art, this definitely was the month I got closer to a lot of the Charter kids in my AP Art class. We've always been acquaintances, but the trip really pulled me closer to most of them, I'd say.

I earn good grades on my first report card :)! However, the second marking period doesn't go as well...not sure what's happening. Senior slump already? A bit, yes, but mostly the difficult stuff settling in, I'd say. Bah.

BUT! Thanksgiving break. Got to see a bunch of friends and go Black Friday (and the day after) shopping, which is always a nice stress reliever! Also sampled Hank's brunch for the first time. The best breakfast menu I've ever had. I plan on going again (wanted to last week, but couldn't) and hopefully photographing the experience with my DSLR, not camera phone. I still don't know if I'm allowed to take pictures at restaurants, in general...

And finally,
December

The quickest and slowest month, for various reasons. Early decision results, waiting for vacation to start, extreme laziness settling in, getting sick, choir Christmas program practice, finishing the rest of my college applications (one left, but I'm done with Common App!)...everything is such a blur, and I can't believe Christmas was just last week.

Ooh, and I got to go snowboarding at Camelback for two days. Not back, I want to go again, though!

But overall, the month passed in a snap. And to think that I just summarized my whole year...pretty crazy. Something I implicitly wish annually is that the upcoming year is memorable and better than the last. Clearly, each year is probably going to have memorable points, but I'm glad to say that this was one of my favorites. So much has happened, and so much has changed, but in a refreshing and eye-opening way.

2011, bring it.

30 December 2010

day twenty-seven

This month, in great detail

December.

Hmm...to sum things up, since I really do have to get to work and promised myself I wouldn't go "in great detail" since the last post was way too long and only encompassed a single week:

- Birthdays of beloved friends
- Lots of college apping
- Lots of not going to the mall and then suddenly going to the mall the week prior to Christmas
- Lots of watching online TV
- An impressive amount of reading done (impressive meaning ~2 books, haha)
- An impressive amount of DVDs bought (also meaning 2. We never buy movies)
- Lots of cleaning (my mom got a new vacuum and I have become a slight germaphobe)
- Lots of missing school due to illness, from what the attendance record that was just mailed to me claims...hmph.
- Lots of aching. Well, not really--but the magnitude to how sore my entire body was after that two-day snowboarding trip is enough to claim a month of aching.
- Lots of fashion blog-reading
- Lots of lovin' on my new MBP :)

And I think I can stop there. There's so so so much stuff to do before the clock strikes 12am on New Year's Day! I'm excited, but I want to have a significant amount of work complete before then. Likely not happening, but I love fresh starts and so I'm going to try to get what I can done.

Will write a post tomorrow!

28 December 2010

day twenty-six

Your week in great detail

Due to my augmented procrastination and urgent need to actually get out of bed and do some work, I present to you a short recap of my week! (But in adequate detail, I hope :))

Tues (12/21):
The second "real" day of my holiday break, I woke up at around 11am and left for a friend's house after a quick breakfast. From there, we went to the mall to meet up with two other friends (although one was with her boyfriend for the majority of the time since friend1 still needed to get a gift for her). I've actually never hung out with these girlies, but I love them to death and they have this contagious but eye-roll-able energy to them that is so fun. One of my bests commented on it being strange that I'm friends with them, since my personality is quite usually the opposite (a balance between very, very laid back and "slightly flustered," as reasonably described on a Christmas card I got this year, heh :)).

We beelined to A&F to find gifts after I picked up a few stuffed animals and packs of cards per my mom's request. I ended up buying nothing, but the two I was with bought me this beautiful yarn/plush scarf that I've had my eye on. I adore it; thought it was just a fancy of mine, but it really is one of my favorites. I love the fair isle print on it.

Nonetheless, I ended up finding well-priced ceramic bowls from Anthropologie from my mom, and didn't buy anything else except various drinks (ICEE, Starbucks Chai, McD's Sweet Tea...I know, random). This Christmas came as a total surprise to me, and I wrote cards as opposed to buying gifts :| a bit strange on my behalf, but I think the money was well saved and cards with time spent on them are worth more than gifts (to me, at least). Yet I still feel obliged to pick up gifts for a few of my friends who spent a particularly large effort on me, the aforementioned friends included. I have things in mind but can't locate the gifts I want to buy them in person, so everything is on hiatus now :(.

About the designated leave time, I realized that I could hitch a ride home from a group of other friends who were at the mall at the same time. I said bye to my first group and switched, and then proceeded to spend the next three hours doing absolutely nothing but trying gelato (!!!) and kvetching about leaving. Tactful, I know. In my defense, they were unnecessarily elongating their stay at the mall to annoy me, but I should have expected that in the first place.

After going home, I literally did nothing. <-- A trend for the rest of my winter break. I think I finished watching Chuck, although that might have happened on Monday? Hm...

Weds (12/22):
Rosie came over! We designated this day for a long-overdue food party with a focus on potatoes, but only the mashed potatoes really had to do with potatoes...ANYWAY:

We assembled a list of food we needed to buy and found other ingredients in my fridge (always unexpected. We did however end up buying two extra cartons of sour cream since I overlooked the fact that I already had a full one...), decided on Chocolate Cheesecake (recipe here!) and Grilled Chicken Sandwiches (chicken marinated by yours truly the night before...there's a first for everything) with a parsley/mayo dip and also a cauliflower/carrot dip.

After shopping at ACME (what is custard powder?!), we got home pretty late in the morning and began making everything at once. I'm pretty sure we used every single bowl my family owns, and the sink was piled full on both sides once we finished cooking the chicken and making the dip and potatoes. I really wanted to document the process via Canon, but my hands were so full and I've been on an unofficial photography hiatus which really needs to end...so you'll have to take my word that it was delicious. And perfect. Very healthy. I'll take photos next time :). I plan on making the same sandwich again in the future!

But we settled in the family room to wait for the cheesecake to bake while we were eating lunch, and happened to find The Office on Netflix Instant, the perfect coincidence. I always have this thing for catching up in TV shows during breaks, and this made things so much easier...but that's another story for another time. We watched a few episodes then switched to Inception despite having planned on Pan's Labyrinth earlier. Quite a head sore because I had watched it the night before (aha! I didn't do nothing after all! ...). After the movie ended, we took the cheesecake out of the fridge and tried some.

Absolute. Heaven.

To make a long story short, I have never ever ever baked something out of scratch like that (I think). It was so good. Our Jello custard whip thing was the perfect substitute for custard powder, and although I didn't have a circular pan, the regular cake tray-thing worked well and it was such an ambitious and successful day. Yum. Definitely making that cheesecake again. Rose took home half of it and my family quickly gobbled up the other half...so incredible.

Thurs (12/23):
My dad came home early (unfortunate, since I had just woken up and was watching The Office on Netflix again when he came in...not the best impression at 2pm) and my brother and I decided to head out to the mall. Because of my participation in our church's annual Christmas program, I have to wear a red top, and have always borrowed one or nonchalantly wore white. This year, I decided that buying one would probably end up being a safe investment, as I really have no plain red shirts, and so we set off.

I thought it'd be a quick trip, but I was sidetracked and entered the relatively new H&M and UO at the mall for the first time. I like shopping by myself; I tried on quite a few things but ended up putting them all back. I think I'm getting thriftier. Or maybe it was in anticipation that the only place I'd find a long-sleeved red shirt was at A&F, where I had spotted one a few days prior...and I was right. A bit too pricy in my opinion, but sales work wonders and my mom ultimately approved :).

I also stopped by AE right before leaving to see if my decision in not buying a pair of pants the trip before was justified--it was! I actually found a sweater I've been coveting for a few weeks if not a month, and at a discounted + 30% off price. Parfait.

Went home, was sadly disappointed since the fam was supposed to reassemble and go to a quick Szechuan dinner before the Christmas program dress rehearsal, but ended up being unable to since my mom had to work late :(. I got dressed and left for the rehearsal, only to be greeted by dozens of people in casual wear...apparently I did not receive the memo that this year's dress rehearsal was actually a normal rehearsal. Yay.

Nevertheless, had fun time at church and got to see friends. The same best mentioned earlier invited me skiing (!) with her family over the end of the 25th-26th, which had me overly ecstatic because my parents had previously mentioned that I could go with her on a day trip...after a very short monologue of convincing, they decided it would be fine :). The only problem? It was to coincide with the bigs/littles program I had helped plan for the upcoming Sunday; however, my two littles were unable to make the program anyway, and it had a large chance of being postponed due to lack of availability, so I decided I had made the right choice :(.

Fri (12/24):
Christmas Eve! I woke up and the fam made up the previous night's missed dinner with lunch, followed by a quick trip to the bank/Talbots next to the bank. The bank was closed, but Mom picked up a nice green sweater for $1 after her dividend credit (I was only a bit irked that she had fickly told me the day before that I had to wear red to the program), definitely a good deal. I also eyed a few small statement necklaces (I love jewelry but never get any due to the lack of quality and chipping of gold paint on most that are reasonably priced), and mom bought me one in light of the fact that I didn't ask for anything for Christmas. This is an unnecessary detail, but it matched the AE sweater I had picked up the day before perfectly :).

The rest of the day was a frenzy of taking a long "break" and then realizing that I had to write cards, followed by skipping dinner and getting right to church to help with the little kids' worship program and then performing selections of Handel's Messiah on stage. It went very well, and the sanctuary was packed, which always brings a smile to my face.

Reception was nice, got to see a lot of friends who departed for college and never came back (sniff), but the evening ended too quickly and my family went home.

We started watching the illustrious Avatar when previously-mentioned Bestie proposed a change in plans involving leaving at 8am on Christmas day, so we could get on the slopes a day early. Eep. I went upstairs to start packing (have I ever mentioned how horrible I am with the whole packing thing? I used to require two-weeks head start, and now it's completely flipped) but ended up going to sleep out of frustration since I couldn't locate my goggles.

Sat (12/25):
Admittedly, I wasn't the happiest camper when I woke up at 6:30am to find my goggles and finish packing. However, I got it done and grudgingly left the house. My spirits rose after seeing my Bestie and sister...I did feel guilty about being not nearly enough grateful to my parents, though :(. It slipped my mind that it was Christmas...yet we left late, had a relatively uneventful ride there, got to Camelback, and saw lots of people we knew.

...

Anyway, fun day! I didn't eat at all, but the excitement was more than enough fuel. I hadn't strapped into a snowboard since Jan 1 (I only know this since my boarding jacket still had the tag on, whoops) and was sure I had forgotten everything, as I had never properly learned, but it came more naturally than the past (few) times and I had a friend help me. Even though we only had about 2.5 hours total since the lifts opened late and closed early due to Christmas, I think I made a lot of progress.

Also, the Bestie's mom talked to customer service and got us the rental equipment free of charge the next day (we got to keep it overnight! No long lines) and lift tickets for a discounted price. Score.

We did, however, get extremely lost on the way to the resort/suite/townhouse/thing we were to stay at, but it ended up being a nice night. Watched Mythbusters with the Bestie's little brother and friend, learned that I still really want a Porsche (ha) and that if you drive them at 90mph in the rain with the convertible top down, you won't get wet.

And then to sleep.

Sun (12/26):
Woke up barely sore, which was nice, but quickly headed out to Camelback again after cleaning up the room (strange, since it was set up as a hotel-type room but you are charged otherwise? Not so sure how it worked, but there are no real maids so you have to take care of it yourself. Like renting a house).

Made more progress on the snow, I think. I'm convinced I want to get my own board this season, which I have been saying year after year but never really putting into action. Rental fees are a bit absurd if you go often, and if I want to stick with this, I'll be going often...nonetheless, had fun, hit up a green circle (lawl) three times at the end of the day, and have a reasonable grasp on linking turns. More than I've ever done in the past, at least. But surely progress!

We left around 5pm, in the middle of an expected snowstorm. The roads were supposedly horrible in Delaware, and with my parents volunteering at CMC (Chinese Missions Convention) in Valley Forge and the family I was with planning on going to said conference the next day, we decided to stop there for the night and save an hour of driving.

A bit awkward, since I had already told everyone I wasn't planning on going, but it was fun to see familiar faces, even though I ached all over and still had most of my snow gear on, haha. I almost starved to death at the end of the night, but thankfully a friend of my mom's had saved me food and I happily went to sleep on the floor of a room at the Radisson. I think that was actually the first time I've ever seen a king-sized bed, which I unfortunately didn't get to sleep in (although my parents rented the room, other families had also been stranded so we allowed the two other ladies we were sharing with sleep there. They deserved it, anyway)...but I slept more than soundly due to the exercise I had gotten that day :).

Mon (12/27):
Woke up unbelievably sore, but no time to waste! We checked out and left the hotel, getting home at about 9am. Abu was very impatient to be let out, and snow blanketed everything...though not as much as I would like :(. Anyway, the day was rather uneventful. I took a nap, watched more of The Office, but did however finish all my art supplement stuff for college applications!

And, simultaneously, discovered that I had messed up big-time with two of my college applications. One more so than the other...but God is in control, and ultimately it was the result of my carelessness (although I swear I took the utmost precautions in documenting every step and every deadline). On the plus side, I'm more than fairly certain that they will still review my applications, although there might be a negative edge to things because of what happened. Though again, God is in control, and that was a hard hit on the head concerning my causality when it comes to the important things...should have triple-checked, quadruple-checked, etc. Although I was positive that I had. Ah, well.

Mom and Dad made hotpot for dinner! And then I set off to finish a college essay in light of what had happened earlier in the day. I did get it done, but went to sleep late, however satisfied.

Tues (12/28):
I woke at a horrendous 12pm, at lunch, read some of my required school reading (A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich), which is actually interesting though it has a reputation of being a dud. I watched a few more episodes of The Office because I was positive I would be doing a buttload of work the rest of the day, until I went back upstairs and accidentally fell asleep again.

Until 5pm.

Which is when I got up.

Which is when I turned on my computer and decided to write this, so I could feel at least a bit productive (since finishing the 30-day challenge is something I want to do by January 1).

...

OKAY time for dinner (hot pot again, I think!) and then I'm determined to knock out either the rest of my book or another college essay or two. Or both. Or half of my book and one college essay and a bit of my homework. But I really want to finish all my college applications (minus the one due after January 1) by tomorrow...let's see if I can make this happen!

And now that I look at it, I did write in detail. So much for a recap. I tell myself that I'll do one thing and another happens. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.

A learning process, eh?

21 December 2010

day twenty-five

Your day, in great detail

I wake at around 10:40, thanks to a stink bug landing on my window. Something about its buzz makes me antsy. A few minutes later, I doze off...but yet again, hear the bug. This time, it falls. I groan, wake up, locate it (on the windowsill), and flush it down the toilet. Back to bed.

I wake up again and remember that last night I fell asleep reading. Thus, I didn't do devotions or, more disgustingly, brush my teeth. I definitely wake up, run to the bathroom, finish what I need to, and then start reading again.

I move downstairs to read. I have this weird aesthetics fix where I picture myself being more comfortable when located in a more picturesque location. Not sure if that makes sense. But nonetheless, I move to the sofa to read with my blanket; Abu whines for a moment, and I read.

Stomach growls.

I growl at my brother. He's up, but has headphones on (as usual), making it impossible for him to hear. What are NON-soundproof headphones? He's never heard of such a thing. The music is so annoyingly loud, even if someone was robbing the house and holding him to gunpoint, I doubt he'd hear. I go upstairs to yell at him, and we leave for errands.

Arrive at pho. I haven't had it in some time because my penchant for these admittedly delicious Vietnamese noodles has been semi-outgrown, mostly because I've had it so many times (weekend after weekend, sometimes day after day). I try it again. Not bad, but at the end I wish I had ordered this other, dry dish my mom tried once. Oh well.

We go to Best Buy, browse the Apple stand (the MacBook Air 11.6" is adorable, my kind of netbook :)), browse other laptops, browse camcorders, browse cameras, browse TVs (the new 3D ones are pretty cool, but not something I'm interested in), browse gaming consoles, and finally get around to getting the blank DVD-Rs and cases I need to finish my college application supplements.

Afterward, home, I read until I tire. It's about 4:30...I doze off (wow, I am so productive). Mom calls, it's 5:20. Almost time for art, but I refuse to get up. Dad comes home, we have a slight argument about food, I feel like throwing up, we leave for art.

Art. I start a new project with Teacher's approval and equal enthusiasm. It's to be a bungee jumping picture, 12"x48", based in Mt. Rainier, a beautiful Washington tourist attraction that I visited when the family was situated in Richland.

At 9-something, we leave...arrive at home. Mom's back, makes wonton soup for me, and we start watching Inception. Dad joins us as she dozes off. We cut the movie off 1/3 way through because Mom's too tired. I decide to search for the Godiva hot chocolate mix we bought last year, only to find the old and now-dusty tin. Bleh.

Eventually, Mom and I give up looking for it and I take a shower. I come downstairs and make a bangin' cup of chai, and go back upstairs. I plan my lunar eclipse hunt with my brother (though I'm still not sure if I really want to go out into the cold and watch...), find my tripod, and plan on reading, but then decide to do a blog post. So here I am.

Actually, it's just past 1am, so technically I'm into "tomorrow" already, but that's that. My day in great detail :).

Now back to my book! And we'll see how this lunar eclipse things turns out. Despite the cost of my camera, I'm not sure my lens is sufficient to catch the eclipse on film. Worth a shot, though?

17 December 2010

day twenty-four

Whatever tickles your fancy

Random, but in light of an acquaintance's recent success in scoring a job at A&F's Fifth Avenue store, a fairly recent memory was re-evoked.

If this summer ends up looking unproductive, I may or may not be spending it in Palo Alto with my brother! My parents' original idea was for me to get an easy job waiting tables or something of the sort, but since I was given a job offer while visiting Stanford Shopping Center's A&F last September, they agreed that I could move to the West Coast for the summer and work there (more fun than taking food orders!). And force my brother to live in his closet while I take over his room.

Heckyeahhahh.

Just kidding. I'm not even sure how that would work, although my parents seriously agreed without much thought. Strange.

Anyway, this is more ironic because I'm pretty sure I don't qualify for A&F's height limits, but it's a cute memory I mostly forgot about. I was walking around with my Canon (just visited the Golden Gate Bridge) in an inappropriately-warm winter batwing sweater and white shorts when the assistant manager/something of that sort flagged me down...who then was a bit aghast when I told her I lived in Delaware ("if you're not a Stanford undergrad, what's a Delawhatian doing in NorCal?" kind of reaction) and then embarrassingly advised me to apply for a position at my local store.

It must have been the bad lighting. But nonetheless, it made my day and then I bought a pair of heavily discounted jeans. My last day in CA :(.

Okay that's where the story ends. Now back to Chuck. I think I watched 10 hours worth of episodes today. I'm finally on the last episode of season 3! Whoo :)

day twenty-three

A YouTube video

Oh, this one's easy!:

Ian Eastwood & Tucker Barkley dancing to "Firework."

I saw this on my FB Newsfeed the day it came out...I still can't stop watching it. Although my dancing expertise is limited to six-year-old ballet and tap, I don't know. I think it's fantastic.

15 December 2010

day twenty-two

A website

This just started today--hassle free goodwill-doing just in time for the holidays, no? I love the idea. The installment also doesn't require restarting your computer, something I absolutely detest. A+ on my list!

day twenty-one

A recipe

How to be satisfied no matter what college decision you receive:

Step One: Trust Him and His ultimate plan for you
Step Two: Immerse yourself in His Word
Step Three: Believe in His Word
Step Four: Love Him :)

12 December 2010

day twenty

A hobby of yours

Without sounding completely mental, I like staring out windows on rides through local roads and play this game I made up utilizing the road lines and something along the lines of DDR/Tap Tap minus the music. I'm not sure when it started, or why, and I do realize I probably do sound like a freak, but I think it used to mainly be a way for me to pass time on the bus before falling asleep.

Meep.

11 December 2010

day nineteen

A talent of yours

I can fall asleep within thirty seconds on any moving vehicle :)

...Not sure if that counts, but I do value my sleep!

10 December 2010

day eighteen

Whatever tickles your fancy

I've been running, trying to be one who sees
I've been working salvation out of my knees
There is nothing better than knowing
We are redeemed

I'm believing, trusting in Creative Hands
I am praying for our world to bow to Your plan
And this one thought is unmistakeable
I take up my cross and follow You, Lord

When You stand, the tall trees and mountains bow
When You speak, the fiercest of oceans is still
And I see the sinner seek devotion, the lost become chosen
And I fall to my knees

I'm forgiven by a Savior who did not deserve death
He was blameless, and I was lost in shamefulness
I'm delivered, but it doesn't seem right
Unless I keep my eyes focused on the Savior who gave His life

In the middle of a world that denies it believes
It is breaking apart at the very seams
There is one thing to be alive for,
And it's to take up my cross and follow You, Lord

When You stand, the tall trees and mountains bow
When You speak, the fiercest of oceans is still
And I see the sinner seek devotion, the lost become chosen
And I fall to my knees

And I fall to my knees

I will take up my cross and follow, Lord where You lead me
I will take up my cross and follow wherever You go

When You stand, the tall trees and mountains bow
When You speak, the fiercest of oceans is still
And I see the sinner seek devotion, the lost become chosen
And I fall to my knees

When You stand, the tall trees and mountains bow
When You speak, the fiercest of oceans is still
And I see the sinner seek devotion, the lost become chosen
And I fall to my knees

And I fall to my knees

Lord, You bring me to my knees...

...I found a place, caught in open arms
Where love's embrace mends a broken heart
Here I will stay, all my days
Draw me closer

07 December 2010

day seventeen

An art piece (painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.)

How appropriate: art, the bane of my existence (this week). With Scholastics due on Monday/technically this Thursday, and the awards I receive determining my midterm grade, this is by far one of the worst weeks of the year. Complete with cramming, wringing out the remains of any possible creative juices, bouncing ideas off classmates, and wishing you had picked a more vague concentration, art is all I've been thinking about. Good thing I managed to pull some photos+a sculpture together to make the eight necessary pieces a probable happening. Gotta work on my Parachute piece tonight.

Nonetheless, here's something I did recently:

It's "finished" (although I was supposed to make corrections a few weeks back), but this was the driving idea behind a switch from my "something's missing" concentration to suspension.

Andddd hopefully by this time, it's clear that the bird is a marionette...yup.

But all right, going to do something unproductive and then take a nice, long nap. I love when teachers accidentally don't give any homework. Mmm :)

05 December 2010

day sixteen

A song that makes you cry (or nearly)

Shipwreck -- Starfield

Random fun fact: did you know that the word "shipwreck" is naufrage in French? Yay vocabulary!

04 December 2010

day fifteen

A fanfic

......

Well, confession time: back in the good ol' fourth grade, I wrote fan-fiction with my best friends. Collaboration was always the coolest, since you had to work with other peoples' writing, which was always interesting.

But: Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. What other books so realistically fabricate fictional worlds, so to allow your mind to totally drift into other possible storyline/plots?

Heh, no shame.

03 December 2010

day fourteen

A nonfiction book

Oh, this is hard. I'm very much a fiction/historial fiction/realistic fiction/based on a true story person...but in that case, I shall say:

Brave New World Revisited, Aldous Huxley

Haha, I know--how original. But I do find this afterward very interesting, reflections on his original conjectures and what actually happens...all this book talk makes me want to start reading again. Definitely going to happen.

29 November 2010

day twelve

Whatever tickles your fancy

Here's a relatively small Micron piece I just completed for my AP Art concentration. I'm not sure if this will make it in the long run, but I'm supposed to be working on concentration piece #4 and #5...and this would be #3 (#2's not even done yet, heh).

SO: improvisation was a bit necessary.

Pretty much: it's a tree, with wind chimes, a bird house, and a single leaf suspended. I do realize that bottom of the tree is not exactly proportional to the rest of it, but I like it in person. It has character.

I'm not sure if this will count, since it's almost painfully simple, but I like it. I love simplicity, but I'm not one to go for that in art. I like the illustration style (a friend from my immersion program is especially talented in this area), but I've never done much with it.

I also recently worked on a small piece inspired by another friend, who is actually pictured in the post below. She's planning on going to school for fashion design (and will totally make it), and her use of markers--markers!!! I was always confused by markers until she started using them; well, I still am, but it's much better now--spurred me to do a really simple Micron+marker piece. I want to work more with newer, more innovative mediums...I've been painting for over a year, and although I love it and have much more to improve on, I can't stay still.

...but okay, time to shower/study for my Physics test, eep!!! I'm sick again, which is a pain in the butt, and missed my private group art lesson today :( but hopefully this time at home helps me recover...I have no idea what's going on right now.

28 November 2010

day eleven

A photo of you taken recently

Right after dinner, @Times Square on my AP Art trip right before Thanksgiving break :) I'm on the very left...with my hair whippin' back and forth. Ha sike.

Speaking of, I never talked about any of my college visit trips...guess that will be coming up soon! I finally uploaded everything onto Facebook last night. For some reason it seems 10x faster and easier on my MBP. I love this thing.
